Castle Sant' Angelo
Rome, Italy

"Wandering along the Tiber on a pleasant December evening, I captured this image. The misty air appeared almost viscose in the light thrown off from the hyper-illuminated castle. Warm and eerie... Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as Hadrian’s Mausoleum, is a colossal circular structure that was built by Emperor Hadrian (117-138) on the right bank of the Tiber River in Rome, Italy. It's construction was completed by Antoninus Pius in 139, and in 271 Emperor Aurelian adapted it from a tomb to a fortress as part of the elaborate defense system he oversaw. In 1277 it Nicholas II occupied the castle and connected it to the Vatican with a secret corridor. From fortified castle to prison to torture center, the Castel Sant'Angelo has enjoyed many reincarnations across the centuries, and today serves as a museum."
