WELCOME e-MARGONAUTS :: Atlanta on my Mind
=============================================================
Ten minutes away from the airport and I was pleasantly surprised
by how light and easy the air on the highway felt. “The air is so
fresh here, Tammy,” I told my childhood friend. She laughed. We
were sitting in her convertible with the top down in a freeway packed
with morning traffic. But the air was fresh to me, even if there
was a truck blowing exhaust in front of us. “Oh trees! Look at all
these trees! The air.” I felt as if I had just been released from
prison.
I had hated Georgia and vowed never to return unless it was for
my dear friend Alice. I learned that she was ill a few weeks ago.
Still, I weighed the importance between seeing her and finishing
some work first. Sensing I was resisting the trip to Georgia, my
group of older, Taipei-based friends helped put things into perspective:
“Nana, have you ever known death to wait?” I booked my ticket.
Although I had planned on only staying for about five days, I extended
it by two days. By the end of my first week in Atlanta, I wanted
to get my driver’s license and become a Georgia resident again.
“Atlanta is growing. It’s becoming an international city.” I’d heard
these words from many people before, but I'd never able to fully
imagine it. And the best part was my childhood history.
During my week in Atlanta I ate delicious Korean food, soul food,
Mexican, Cantonese, Indian, and even biker food at the Highlander,
in Midtown. Small neighborhoods have been transformed into trendy
little towns. More people are moving into the city, a surprisingly
green city with all sorts of trees, including the dogwood tree that
flowers beautifully in spring.
Atlanta, Georgia is thriving, but my friend is not well. Fortunately,
she was stable enough to take me along to watch her play violin
in a rehearsal with the Atlanta Symphony.
And so it is. After arriving home in Taipei shortly, I will unpacked
my suitcase and then immediately begin packing a box with summer
clothes bound for Atlanta. I want to be there when the pollen dusts
the asphalt, and when the spring rains wash the pollen away again,
sending it swirling down the roads. I look forward to canoeing down
the Chattahoochee River again and breathing fresh air, even on the
highway.
After my short love affair in Atlanta, I flew into Los Angeles and
stayed with my brother for a week. Last Friday, I invited our staff
editor, Alice Kang, over for wine and food. It certainly was refreshing
to finally meet Alice, so full of life and laughter, face-to-face
after many months of "virtual" interaction. Unfortunately, our other
Los Angeles-dwelling editor was unable to make it, but I'll be back
and I'm holding my breath that we'll be able to rendezvous next
time. I also got the chance to speak to prize-winning travel writer
and editor Jen Leo (
www.jenleo.com
) about her upcoming interview with us. Jen’s new book, “The Thong
Also Rises” has just come out.
Los Angeles is busy, full of highways filled with traffic and truly
an anthropologic study on its own. As I stood reminiscing in line
at the security gate at LAX, I turned for a last glance at my brother,
briefly blocked by my hand sending him a kiss. I will return soon
enough. Just one more season.
This month I bring to you, Doug Lansky (
www.douglansky.com
), our interview guest. Currently working on three new titles, including
the upcoming “Rough Guide to Travel Survival: The Essential Field
Manual,” Doug Lansky gives lectures on world travel at almost every
destination you can imagine. Read what he’s got to say about traveling,
family, and writing.
Finally, we can’t wait to share our editors’ stories with you. Have
a look at what we’ve scribbled just for you. And now it’s time to
stow away my notebook to prepare for landing as I see the cabin
crew shuffling to their landing stations. Until next time, bon voyage
and be safe.
Cordially,
Nana Chen

FEATURE e-MARGONAUT :: Doug Lansky

After telling copy machines where to go, Doug Lansky packed his
bags and took off saying goodbye to life as an intern at Late
Night with David Letterman, "Spy Magazine," and "The New

Behind the US Open 2005 Snowboarding Championships, by
George Davis
I'm soaking in the Long Trail House hot tub under a
crystal-clear evening sky. It's Sunday, March 20, and—like the
butter cream moon hovering above Stratton—I'm waxing slowly,
shedding light but faintly, obliquely on my subject. Only, with
the moon, it's picturesque, even… breathtaking... I had been
involved in the just-ended 2005 US Open Snowboarding
Championships.

Patagonia, Land of the Big Feet and Fallen Toenails, by Nana
Chen
Arriving in Patagonia, we saw mint blue lakes that made my mouth
water. I had never seen such colors in nature. I wanted to wear
the glacial lakes. To get to El Chaltén we had to fly to El
Calafate first where we’d catch a bus. Hours later, our bus cut
through the hills, following teal streams...

Next Stop: São Paulo, by Melody Lee
When I moved to San Francisco for college, I abandoned all
driving privileges and relied solely on public transportation. I
became a bus guru, navigating around the city with a tattered,
well-used bus map... However, all the ticket stubs and
color-coded subway lines could never prepare me for six months
spent among the monstrous tangle of highways, cars, and buses of
São Paulo...
