Description
~ e-MARGAUX LITE :: Quotations, Anecdotes and Humour
Two weeks overdue?!?! It’s regrettable but true that the last
two weeks’ hurly burly delayed the release of our September
newsletter. Delayed but not prevented. And since there’s much to
tell and no time to spare since you are doubtless awaiting this
missive with baited breath, I’ll dive right in.
Welcome back, e-Margonauts, to the meanderer’s muse, the flaneur’s
fancy, the adventurer’s guide, the global wanderer’s
companion, and the cyber-savvy nomad’s zaniest ‘zine,…
welcome back to the ever-surprising, ever-inspiring e-Marginalia.
At the very top of the news, I’d like to extend a warm and
enthusiastic bienvenue to Nana Chen who has joined the e-Margaux
team as e-Marginalia Travel Editor. Nana, the
quintessential global nomad, epitomizes the wandering spirit
which we celebrate, romance and advocate. And she brings a Big
League writing/editing pedigree and superhuman energy level to the
equation which you’ll all agree we’re more than ready for! Her
first
round of editing has established an exciting new precedent
which she’s already striving to trump with the next issue. And
as soon as she’s polished off the final details for the December
contest, she’ll embark on a trans-global adventure which will
extend into the new year. She’s promised intermittent updates
while on the road, so be sure to keep an eye on our
blog for tidbits of vicarious living.
In other exciting news, the third e-Marginalia travel story
contest ended at the end of August, and it’s time to celebrate
the winners. The “run away” favorite took the lead early and
never looked back. No stranger to e-Margaux.com, this writer has
just published a fourth story, “Bavaria
and Beyond” in e-Marginalia which makes her the only writer
to have been featured in every contest to date! I would like to
offer a huge congratulations to Nancy DiDio for her immensely
popular piece, “Timeless
Tuscany”. An amazing performance, to be sure.
Second place goes to Mike Norman for his Alpine adventure, “Valtournenche:
An Italian Ski Adventure” which was well read and well
circulated. This was one of the most forwarded (Tell a Friend)
stories we’ve ever published! And third place was a tie! Liz
McEachern Hall’s “Dogsledding:
An Australian in Maine" and Amanda Kendle’s "Terrier
Tour of Abruka Island, Estonia” were neck-and-neck during
most of the second half of the contest. Not only were both stories
immensely popular, both attracted plenty of comments. In fact, Liz’s
story set an all-time record with almost fifty (that’s right
48!) comments before the contest ended. And last but not least,
Kevin Brown and Gloria Schramm tied as fourth place runners up.
Way to go!
This was our most popular e-Marginalia contest to date, and the
reward checks being shipped out to the winners reflect this
pleasing leap forward. Each new contest propels the prize money up
and up, and we are anticipating that the current contest which
began at the beginning of this month will once again set new
records!
Which brings us to the final big news item: e-Marginalia Travel
Story Contest #4 is now underway. Check out the following stories
which are competing for most popular between September 1 and
December 1, 2004:
I sincerely hope you enjoy reading the new stories. The
storytelling and photography will captivate you, and Nana’s
stellar editing guarantees a smooth, engaging read each and every
time. (“A smooth, engaging read each and every time”? That
sounds like ad copy for a soap opera or dime store romance, doesn’t
it? Help! It must be time to still my fingers…)
Relief
Riders International (RRI) announces its inaugural
adventure ride through the Thar Desert of Rajasthan,
India. Beginning on October 22, 2004, a maximum of
fifteen riders will travel on horseback through rural
India's unforgettable landscape delivering food,
medical supplies and medical care, and goats to five
remote villages. Relief Riders International offers
participants not only an opportunity to see and visit
places of extraordinary beauty, but the chance to make
life better for the communities they visit along the
way...
~ FEATURE STORIES :: Read these Inspiring Travel Stories
Phi
Ta Khon, Festival of Life
It began
innocently enough: an introductory speech, a line of
brightly costumed children, local beauty queens
smiling at spectators. But the parade lines blurred as
the long procession of colorful revelers turned their
attention to onlookers, teasing them with phallic
swords or grabbing them for a dance. The giant masks
of the Phi Ta Khon festival, artfully carved from the
trunks of coconut trees, dominated the muddy street
with their menacing, ghoulish grins and, if you looked
a bit closer, the smiling eyes of the Thai people
behind them…
Sandboarding
in Peru
Huacachina,
a town forgotten by many guidebooks, sits hidden
behind giant sand dunes. The dunes tower so high that
they bring sunset to the town an hour early. It is a
manufactured oasis that grows hotels, hostels, and
restaurants, whose roots run deep within the lake,
whose livelihood depends on this faux oasis and the
draw of the dunes…
Crossing
the Panama Canal
Sailing was
something I never thought I’d do. I never even
thought about it. Then I met Ron. He talked about it
with so much passion I was afraid I had been missing
out. When I was planning my trip to Australia he was
selling all his earthly possessions to purchase a
47-foot sailboat he called, “Yemaya.” Then he
asked if I’d like to come aboard for a month…
